A practical route guide for moving a dog or cat between Dubai or the wider UAE and Great Britain, with government entry rules separated from airline requirements and variable relocation costs.

Quick answer:For UAE → Great Britain, the United Arab Emirates is currently a listed country, so a rabies blood test is not normally required when the standard pet-travel conditions are met. A pet travelling from the UAE normally needs a Great Britain pet health certificate and must enter Great Britain within 10 days of that certificate being issued. Dogs generally need vet-recorded tapeworm treatment 24–120 hours before arrival. For UK → UAE, the United Kingdom is on MOCCAE’s current low-risk-country list, so a rabies antibody titre is generally not required for a direct move when the other UAE conditions are met.
Important geographic note:This guide’s UK-entry section covers Great Britain — England, Scotland and Wales. Pet entry into Northern Ireland follows a different process, so use the Northern Ireland guidance if that is your destination.

Direction-specific rules

What You Need for Each Direction

The rules are not mirror images. Great Britain controls the requirements for an animal arriving from the UAE, while MOCCAE controls entry when the pet is travelling from the United Kingdom to the UAE.

UAE → Great Britain

  • Microchip the pet before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination used for travel.
  • Maintain a valid rabies vaccination. After the first primary vaccination, the travel wait is at least 21 full days and may be longer depending on the vaccine used.
  • The UAE is currently a listed country, so a rabies blood test is not normally required under the standard Great Britain pet-travel route.
  • A UAE-origin dog, cat or ferret normally travels with a Great Britain pet health certificate completed by an authorised official veterinarian.
  • The pet must enter Great Britain within 10 days of the Great Britain pet health certificate being issued.
  • Dogs generally require tapeworm treatment administered and recorded by a vet 24–120 hours before arrival.
  • Use an approved route and travel company, and keep original travel documents available for checks.

United Kingdom → UAE

  • Obtain a MOCCAE import permit before shipment. The current federal fee is AED 200 per animal and the permit is valid for 90 days.
  • The pet needs permanent identification by microchip plus the vaccination and veterinary documents required for release.
  • Current rabies and other required vaccination records must meet MOCCAE conditions.
  • The United Kingdom is currently on MOCCAE’s low-risk-country list, so a rabies antibody titre is generally not required for a direct UK-origin move.
  • Internal and external parasite treatment is required within 14 days before shipment.
  • Current UAE release fees are AED 500 per dog and AED 250 per cat.
Documents & timing

Plan the Paperwork Before the Flight

For UAE → Great Britain, work backwards from the arrival date. If the pet needs its first rabies vaccination, the minimum wait is at least 21 full days and the vaccine itself may require a longer interval. Once the Great Britain pet health certificate is issued, the pet must enter Great Britain within 10 days.

For a dog, fit the tapeworm appointment into the last few days before arrival. The treatment must be recorded by a vet and given no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before the dog enters Great Britain.

Dog-specific timing

Great Britain Tapeworm Treatment: The 24–120 Hour Window

Dogs entering Great Britain generally need tapeworm treatment every time they enter unless they are arriving directly from one of the specifically exempt places. A dog travelling from the UAE does not fall within those exemptions.

The treatment must contain praziquantel or an equivalent proven effective against Echinococcus multilocularis, and the vet must record the product, treatment date and time, stamp and signature in the relevant travel document.

⚠️ Timing risk:if a dog arrives more than 120 hours after treatment, another treatment may be needed before entry. Allow for possible route delays when booking the veterinary appointment.
Legal restriction

Check UK Banned-Dog Rules Before Moving

UK law currently prohibits five dog types: Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully, subject to the applicable exemption rules. Import planning becomes especially sensitive because legal classification can depend on a dog’s physical type and appearance rather than the breed name written on a pedigree or veterinary record.

⚠️ If your dog could resemble a prohibited type, obtain appropriate legal and government guidance before arranging transport. Do not rely only on a breeder description, DNA label or registration name.
Return journey

United Kingdom to UAE Pet Import Planning

The United Kingdom currently appears on MOCCAE’s low-risk list. That means the rabies antibody titre normally required for pets arriving from higher-risk countries is generally not required for a direct UK-to-UAE move when the other conditions are satisfied.

You still need the UAE import permit, permanent microchip, current required vaccinations, official veterinary documentation and the applicable parasite treatment. MOCCAE currently limits personal importation to two companion animals per individual per year, apart from qualifying returning resident animals.

Airline planning

Government Eligibility and Airline Acceptance Are Separate Checks

Correct government paperwork does not guarantee that a particular carrier will accept your pet on a particular flight. Airlines and cargo operators may apply their own crate, animal, aircraft, temperature, breed, route and connection restrictions.

Check the operating carrier rather than relying only on the airline name displayed on a booking site. Codeshares and aircraft changes matter because the pet-handling policy can differ by operator or sector.

What Affects Pet Relocation Cost From Dubai to the UK?

Private relocation cost can change substantially with the animal’s size, IATA-style crate dimensions, flight route, cargo handling, veterinary work and the amount of professional assistance you buy. A Standard Poodle in a large travel crate can create a very different freight bill from a small cat even when the government paperwork is similar.

The calculator above should therefore be treated as a budgeting tool, not a quotation. When comparing providers, ask whether the quoted figure includes veterinary certification, crate supply, airline or cargo charges, airport handling, customs or clearance support, collection and delivery.

Cost-check tip:compare itemised quotes. The cheapest headline number is not necessarily the cheapest completed move if destination handling, crate costs or veterinary paperwork are excluded.
